Global temperatures are expected to exceed the 1.5 °C limit set by the Paris Agreement. The last time Earth warmed to this level, about 125,000 years ago, it triggered the collapse of huge ice sheets.

That history suggests today’s warming will lock in sea‑level rise far greater than what coastal planners are currently prepared for.

With this geological frame of reference, researchers at the Yale School of the Environment examined the impact of sea-level rise on what may be the world’s most physically vulnerable coastal zone. They used prehistoric and contemporary patterns of human mobility.

The research has shown that the shoreline, the most exposed in the world, is projected to move more than 30 miles inland of New Orleans, and by 2070, it will lose about 75% of its remaining wetlands. Eventually, all of coastal Louisiana will become uninhabitable.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana hard, and many coastal communities never fully recovered. Orleans Parish lost about one‑quarter of its residents, while rural Cameron Parish saw more than half of its population move away.

Researchers call this a pulse retreat.” It happens when a big storm or disaster forces people to leave suddenly, and the population never returns to its old size. Instead, the event leaves a lasting mark, reshaping the community map for good.

To see where coastal populations might be headed, researchers looked far into the past. They combined modern census records with archaeological evidence of Indigenous communities and geological clues from the Last Interglacial period, about 125,000 years ago.

By combining modern data with ancient patterns of retreat, the team built a long‑view lens on how coastlines shift and how human populations respond when the sea inevitably advances.

History shows that Indigenous communities in the Mississippi Delta once moved fluidly with the shifting landscape. But today’s shoreline towns, built with deeper attachments to place, face a harsher reality: climate change demands mobility once more.

The problem is that development in many coastal states, such as Florida and Alabama, continues in high‑risk zones with little regard for adaptation.

As one researcher warns, “If you keep building, people will come. So, then, what kind of retreat do you want? Do you want to incentivize it, so people move naturally for jobs, housing, and lifestyle, or do you want them to wait and then leave abruptly in crisis?”
