NASA’s Curiosity rover spotted driving on Mars by NASA orbiter

In a historic first, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has captured the Curiosity rover in motion on the Red Planet, marking a significant moment in interplanetary exploration. The image, taken on February 28, 2025—Sol 4,466 of the mission—by the HiRISE (High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera, shows the rover as a small dark speck moving across Mars’ rugged terrain.

For over a decade, Curiosity has provided invaluable insights into Mars’ geology and climate. While the rover has previously been spotted in stationary images and selfies, this newly acquired orbital snapshot shows it actively traversing its path, leaving behind a trail of tracks stretching approximately 1,050 feet (320 meters). These imprints, shaped by Curiosity’s tires, may persist for months before being erased by Martian winds.

The rover has been progressing steadily from the Gediz Vallis channel toward a region suspected to contain boxwork formations—potential evidence of ancient groundwater activity. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) carefully coordinate its journey, navigating obstacles and optimizing its path using advanced software.

The HiRISE camera, designed to capture high-resolution images from orbit, recorded the scene using a black-and-white format with a central strip of color. While previous images have depicted Curiosity in full color, it fell within the monochrome section this time.

As Curiosity ascends a steep slope toward its next research destination, scientists anticipate new findings that may shed light on Mars’ watery past.
