Anti-Collision System Called ‘Roads That Honk’ Could Help in Reducing Road Accidents

Almost 1.25 million people die in road accidents every year. Road traffic injuries are the main cause of death among young people of age 15–29 years. Previously, one of the Korean company has developed a Rolling guardrail Barrier System. Their aim was to prevent vehicles from driving off the road and reducing road accidents.

This time, an Indian company HP Lubricants in collaboration with Leo Burnett India, creating an anti-collision vehicle management system to make roads safer. The system is known as ‘Roads That Honk’. The system involves smart poles warn vehicles on both sides with the help of horns.

The poles in this system detect vehicle speeds and then communicate with each other to warn vehicles on either side. They transmit electromagnetic waves and then measure the frequency change of the reflected wave. Through this, the poles determine the speed of the approaching vehicles with the help of a radar sensor.

For charging, the poles use solar modules and also come with a special radar system.

Rajdeepak Das, chief creative officer at Leo Burnett for South Asian operations said, “2016 recorded numerous accidents across national highways. This is a major concern for local and state administration. We are glad to have been behind an innovation that harnesses the power of technology and uses radar signals to intimate drivers.”

Currently, the roads are being deployed on NH1 road along the Jammu-Srinagar highway- one of the most dangerous roads in India.
